Download youtube videos and convert them to .avi you just give: sudo apt-get install youtube-dl ffmpeg
To Download YouTube Video give: youtube-dl -o example.flv "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdaAWFoWr2c"
and to convert to avi: ffmpeg -i example.flv example.avi
(of course change the name of the video as you please and the youtube link to the video you want to download).

there is a basic way to download youtube & many other site's flv.
open firefox, go to addons, type downloadhelper and install video downloadhelper. you will see 3 balls on the top, when in youtube, click the balls that is playing and download the flv !
just googled this, and is by far the most useful guide on this subjet! For anyone else doing the same thing just put a -p after the youtube-dl part to get it in the highest quality availible
